The Limits of Maintaining and Severing Family Ties

Question

I would like to know what the criterion, application and limits of maintaining family ties and severing them are. Where do the limits of maintaining family ties end, and where do the limits of severing them begin? I wish to know this in the light of the Qur’an and Sunna — the need for such conduct constantly arises in social life, and a servant [of Allah] becomes deserving of either reward or punishment.
