The Title “Hajji”
Question
When the honoured pilgrims return after performing Hajj, they are given the title “Hajji”, and some people start writing “Hajji” themselves. Is it right to address ordinary people with the title “Hajji” or not? People here object that the noble Companions also performed Hajj, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ always performed Hajj, yet the title “Hajji” is nowhere to be seen. Please write the details of this from the Shari‘a.
Answer
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the noble Companions ﵃ were not addressed by the word “Hajji”, nor was there any need for it, because their virtues and merits were countless; besides, Hajj was performed there even by the polytheists. Among us, if some poor person who has no virtues or merits is shown a little respect and honour by being called “Hajji”, there is no harm in it.
