Punishing a wife’s abductor by the community severing relations

Question

Mumtaz Ali, a tailor, enticed away Shukrullah’s wife; for some days he roamed about here and there. When these people returned home, Shukrullah gave his wife talaq. After the ‘idda, Mumtaz Ali had his nikah with this woman performed. Now the headman of the weavers’ community has forbidden all the Muslims of the village from having any conversation with all the tailors — he has even stopped salam and greetings. Who is on the right path, and whom should I side with?

Answer

Enticing away another man’s wife, and a woman running away with an unrelated man, is extremely shameful by reason and custom, and in the Shari‘a a grave sin and an act of disobedience (ma‘siya). Shukrullah gave her talaq — he did well. After the ‘idda the tailor Mumtaz Ali married her — that became permissible.
