Severing relations with relatives who commit major sins

Question

Is it right or not to sever relations with those among one’s relatives and kin who are openly engaged in major sins (kabaʾir)? And what is the ruling if those relatives are non-mahram? For they are in the position of outsiders. And if these same people engaged in major sins mock the people of religion, or regard them as foolish and contemptible, or themselves avoid the people of religion merely because they are religious, what should the people of religion do?

Answer

If, influenced by good character and generosity, they would give up the major sins, or an opportunity arises to admonish them from which benefit is hoped, then one should maintain relations with them and strive to reform them. If reform is expected from severing relations, or there is fear that because of the relationship one will oneself become involved (in it)
