The limit for not speaking to someone because of a grievance

Question

It is commonly said that if Muslims do not speak to one another for three days and one of them dies in that state, he is among the people of Hell. Is this ruling specific to husband and wife, or is it general? And does it concern not speaking for one’s own personal reason or for some other reason?

Answer

If one stops speaking to someone because his religious condition is bad, or because this will bring about his reform, or because harm is feared from him, then this is not blameworthy in the Shariʿa: [ar]أفضل الأعمال الحب في الله والبغض في الله[/ar] “The best of deeds is love for the sake of Allah and hatred for the sake of Allah” (Jamʿ al-Fawaʾid, vol. 2, p. 48).
