Adopting the emblems of the sinful and the dissolute

Question

In our area Muslim women put sindoor (a red powder) in the parting of their hair, and on the forehead colour or a ritual dot-mark of sindoor and a bazaar-bought stick-on dot. How is such adornment and decoration for Muslim women? Kindly inform us of the Shar‘i ruling.

Answer

Where this is the emblem (shi‘ar) of the kafirs or of the sinful (fussaq), it is forbidden “because of imitation” (li-ajl al-tashabbuh).
