Whom must one obey: the parents or the husband?
Question
Zayd does not fully agree that Paradise lies beneath the feet of the parents. In this connection he says that for girls Paradise lies in obedience and submission to her husband, not in obedience to the parents. It is quite possible that what the parents tell the girl to do is something her husband utterly dislikes. In such a situation, if the girl acts on her parents’ word against her husband, the husband’s command is violated; and if she acts on the husband’s word, the parents’ command is disobeyed.
Answer
This too is in the noble hadith: that Paradise lies beneath the feet of the parents, i.e. obeying them, serving them and keeping them pleased is binding (lazim). It is also correct that obedience to the husband is binding (lazim).
