The rights of parents

Question

(1) Are there any rights of the parents upon the children as well, or not? (2) Are these rights of the children obligatory, or only at the level of kindness (ihsan)? (3) Some people state three rights upon the parents: (a) bringing into the world, (b) rearing and raising, (c) marrying off. They have not examined any particulars in this: there are only these three rights. And will these suffice without acknowledging the particulars? (4)

Answer

(1, 2, 3) Parents raise their children physically in any case, out of natural love — animals too rear their young, each in its own way — but the right of human children is greater than that. When the child is born, it should be bathed and the adhan recited in its right ear and the iqama in its left.
