Speaking harshly to one’s father
Question
A harsh exchange was taking place between a father and his son. In anger the father said, “I will hit you with a shoe.” To this the son replied, “I will hit you with a hundred shoes.” The question is: what does the Shari‘a command concerning such a son?
Answer
Sons who treat their father in this way are utterly unworthy and wretched. Honouring the father is wajib; as far as lies in one’s power, the father should be kept pleased, and if he says something in anger, one should listen in silence and by no means give any reply; through this both one’s religion and one’s worldly life are ruined.
