Speaking with the wife’s sister and the husband’s brother

Question

May ‘Umar speak with his adult sister-in-law (his wife’s sister) or not? And what is the ruling on ‘Umar’s wife speaking with her husband’s brother?

Answer

It is permissible for ‘Umar to speak with his wife’s sister when needed, with hijab observed; but appearing before her without hijab, laughing and joking with her informally, and meeting her in seclusion are not permissible. The same is the case of ‘Umar’s wife with her husband’s brother.
