Applying red colouring to the lips

Question

It is customary among women to apply red colouring to the lips. Is this appropriate?

Answer

Destroying natural beauty and producing artificial beauty in its place is contrary even to reason, intelligence and sound taste. If there is something impure in it — as spirit generally is — then the ruling of impurity will also apply to the lips and face.
