The watch chain

Question

Question: Zayd prayed the namaz having tied a strap chain on his watch. Is his namaz valid or not? The chain is the same one that is used nowadays in ordinary watches.

Answer

The strap is tied for the protection of the watch; it is not an ornament (hilya). Likewise the chain is used for the protection of the watch; it too is not an ornament. Praying the namaz with the customary chain, which is neither of silver nor of gold, tied on for the protection of the watch is correct, just as praying the namaz with the strap tied on is correct.
