The ruling on the black burqa, jumper, long skirt, hair rods and lip colour
Question
Question: The black burqa that has become commonly prevalent in cities nowadays — is it permissible or not? If it is impermissible, what is the reason (ʿilla)? There is a garment called a “jumper”: it is very tight at the top and somewhat loose at the bottom — what about using it? And what is the view regarding the long full skirt? Also, women fix iron rods on their heads so that the hair does not come forward — are these permissible or not?
Answer
Clothing that is not the distinctive mark (shiʿar) of the kuffar or fussaq and by which the purpose — covering (the ʿawra) — is achieved is fine; otherwise it is not. Such rods are the bars that are fitted in a door or window so that light and air keep coming in but a man or an animal — a dog and the like — cannot enter; how are such bars fitted on the head?
