What is the ruling on eating shrimp?

Question: Is it right to eat shrimp or not?

Answer

Some have declared it mubah, considering it a kind of fish; but the research of others is that it is not a fish but a different animal, and according to the Hanafis no aquatic animal other than fish is permissible. This view appears to be the more cautious one. In “Majmu‘at al-Fatawa” both views are given.
