The ruling on shrimp

Question

Question: Among the kinds of fish there is a well-known fish, the shrimp. Some scholars call it haram, some makruh tahrimi, some makruh tanzihi, and some permissible without any dislike. What is the actual ruling? Please write with references to Hanafi books.

Answer

According to the Hanafis, of the aquatic animals only fish is permissible, and no other animal is permissible. If the shrimp is some kind of fish itself, then it is permissible, as ‘Allama al-Damiri al-Shafi‘i wrote in “Hayat al-Hayawan” (p. 371), and from it this was transmitted in the third supplement (Tatimma Thalitha) of “Imdad al-Fatawa” (p. 50).
