Shrimp: halal or haram

Question

Question: For some days there has been a heated debate here about whether shrimp is halal or haram. In our Congregational Mosque there is a graduate of Deoband, a scholar who acts on his knowledge. We asked him, and he said it is halal and that it too belongs to the fish family. How far is this correct? Please answer with research so that our unease may be removed: is it haram or halal, and if halal, then of what kind?

Answer

Those who hold that it is a fish declare it permissible, and those who hold that it is not a fish call it impermissible. Mawlana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi ﵀ and Mawlana Khalil Ahmad Saharanpuri ﵀ issued a fatwa that it is impermissible, and this is what caution requires.
