Why is it permissible to eat dead fish?
Question
Question: Why is it correct to consume dead fish (carrion), while consuming the other animals that are halal is not permissible?
Answer
Dead fish has been made an exception in the noble hadith: [ar]أُحِلَّتْ لَنَا الْمَيْتَتَانِ: السَّمَكُ وَالْجَرَادُ[/ar] “Two dead things have been made lawful for us: fish and locusts.” Furthermore, fish has no blood, whereas other animals have blood. Through slaughter it comes out, while if the animal dies by itself it remains in the body, and this blood is impure.
