Food cooked in a Chamar’s house

Question

Question: A Chamar (of an Indian caste of leatherworkers, regarded as low) prepared food at his place, and several Muslims ate it, and some of them also drank wine. What do you say about this with regard to the question of faith (iman)?

Answer

As for food cooked in a Chamar’s house: if it was meat, there is no permission for it; and if it was something else, even then the predominant assumption is that it is impure. Wine, in any case, is impure and haram. Consuming something haram and impure is a grave sin, and faith (iman) becomes very weak; nevertheless, a Muslim will not be called a kafir because of it.
