The Question of Yazid and Mawdudism
Question
There are a few questions which, if you resolve them, will be a great felicity for me; moreover, these very questions have nowadays become, with much clamour, the subject of the religious periodicals here — Tarjuman al-Qur’an, al-Balagh, Bayyinat, Tarjuman-i Islam, Khuddam al-Din and others. The questions are as follows: (1) From the standpoint of fiqh, is Yazid a kafir, a believer (mu’min) or a sinner (fasiq)? (2)
Answer
To debate the kufr or Islam of Yazid is neither a matter of creed, such that without it one’s very iman would not be valid, nor a practical matter on which the deeds prescribed by the Sacred Law would depend. To enter into this debate is to waste one’s precious time.
