Reviling and Vilifying the Companions ﵃

Question

A person who declares any one of the Companions ﵃ to be a kafir, rejected, accursed or an inmate of Hell (we seek refuge in Allah!) — is he a kafir or a Muslim? And is such a person outside the Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a?

Answer

Such a person is outside the Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a. As for one whose iman is established by decisive texts (nusus qat‘iyya) — whoever calls him a kafir will not himself retain his iman. A detailed discussion of this is given in Sharh al-Fiqh al-Akbar. Regarding the noble Companions ﵃ not a single word contrary to reverence should ever be uttered.
