Are the Shi‘a the Saved Sect?
Question
(Anjum Romani, office of the daily Urdu Times, Maulana Azad Road, Mumbai, 15 August.) The Prophet ﷺ, the Master of Creation, said: “After my death there will be seventy-three sects in my Umma; one will be saved and seventy-two will be in the Fire.” All the brethren of Islam agree on this saying of the Prophet ﷺ. And generally among the Muslims only two kalimas are in circulation: one is that which the Shi‘a sect recites, and the other is that which we, the people of the seventy-two sects, recite.
Answer
Regarding the saved sect, the Prophet ﷺ, the Master of Creation, was asked: “Who are they?” (مَنْ هِيَ) — which sect is it? He said: [ar]مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي[/ar] “[Those who are upon] that which I and my Companions are upon” — that is, the saved sect is the one which follows the way and the sunna of the Noble Prophet ﷺ and of his Companions ﵃.
