Selling a clock with a bird
Question
The questioner referred to the earlier answer no. 197, writing that he did not understand it, and, drawing up further questions on it, asked for them to be clarified. (1) Making, selling and using such a clock — do they all have one and the same ruling, or is there a difference? (2) If they all have one ruling, then do the words “vile and blameworthy” (qabih wa madhmum) that were used carry the degree of makruh or of definite haram? Kindly write a little more clearly.
Answer
In the earlier answer, making the image was described as impermissible on the ground that it is an image of a living being — which means haram; and using it was described as vile and blameworthy — which means makruh. As for using it — whether in the form of selling it or of keeping it in one’s possession — because it is property of value (mal mutaqawwim)
