Buying and selling a goat offered as an oblation
Question
Question: Hindus regard the river Ganges as a deity, and Hindu women ask it for the granting of children. When a child is born, the women take a kid goat and go to the bank of the Ganges for the purpose of shaving the hair; there they shave the child’s head, and throw the kid alive into the water as an offering or gift. The contractors of the bathing steps on the riverbank take the kid out of the water and sell it, and everyone — Hindus and Muslims alike — buys it.
Answer
An animal that has been dedicated to the name of other than Allah and offered as an oblation is entirely in the ruling of carrion (mayta). Buying it, selling it, and slaughtering and eating it will all be haram. If details and proof are required, see Fatawa ʿAziziyya (vol. 1, p. 22).
