Buying and Selling Blood

Question

May a healthy person deposit his blood in a bank or not? Or, if someone’s life is in danger, may he give his blood or not?

Answer

Buying and selling blood is not permissible; this is a void (batil) sale. If, however, the situation is such that there is no other way of saving a life, then out of compulsion, to the extent of the need, giving one’s blood selflessly (without payment) is correct.
