Decorating Mosques on the Night of Mid-Sha‘ban and Laylat al-Qadr
Question
What is the ruling on decorating mosques with flowers and leaves on the night of mid-Sha‘ban (Laylat al-Bara’a) and Laylat al-Qadr, when the intention behind the decorating is to celebrate on account of these festivals, not to commit bid‘a (innovation in religion)?
Answer
For Laylat al-Qadr and the night of mid-Sha‘ban the Sacred Law encourages worship, supererogatory prayers (nawafil), recitation of the Qur’an, dhikr and tasbih, du‘a and istighfar; it does not encourage decorating with flowers and the like. “Tyohar” (the Hindi word for ‘festival’)
