Tahajjud Prayer in Congregation on the Night of Mid-Sha‘ban
Question
On the night of mid-Sha‘ban (Laylat al-Bara’a), may the tahajjud prayer be performed in congregation after making an announcement — with the aim that those who do not pray should at least take part on this blessed night and become deserving of reward? If a congregation for tahajjud is held, what is the ruling on it?
Answer
Doing so is makruh and forbidden. Those who do not pray should be given tabligh and firmly urged to be regular in prayer. To tolerate the abandonment of an obligatory act (fard) while inviting to the commission of a makruh act is neither a matter of wisdom nor permitted by the Sacred Law. Gathering for worship on this night is also forbidden. Thus it is in “Maraqi al-Falah”.
