Is the Marriage of a Hereditary Successor to the Shaykh’s Seat a Crime?
Question
In the khanqahs (Sufi lodges) ta‘ziyas (replicas of Imam Husayn’s tomb carried in Muharram processions) are made and sheets are laid [on the graves], and the custom there is that whoever is the hereditary custodian of the master’s seat must not marry; if he marries, he will be removed from the seat, but if he commits fornication, he will not be removed from it. What is the ruling regarding this?
Answer
This is a matter of utmost ignorance and misguidance — that acting upon the Sunna should be deemed a crime, while fornication is not a crime.
