The Legal Status of a Regular Litany Prescribed by One’s Spiritual Guide

Question

The regular devotional recitations that the shaykh has prescribed to the disciple — is completing them fard, wajib, sunna or nafl for the disciple?

Answer

On the part of God Most High it is not fard in the way that prayer, fasting and the like are; however, like a prescription given by a traditional physician or a doctor, it is fard for the removal of the disease.
