The Soul’s Connection with the House After Death

Question

For how long after death does the soul’s connection with the house remain?

Answer

Whatever is done with the deceased before burial — the washing, the shrouding, the weeping, the praising — the soul sees it, and until that time it remains in the custody of an angel. At the time of burial it enters the grave and enters the body, and the questioning and answering of the grave begin; al-Suyuti stated this explicitly in “Sharh al-Sudur”, p. 39.
