How Many Souls Are in Man, and Where They Go After Death

Question

Is there one soul in man or two? To which places do they go after death, and what are their names?

Answer

There are three kinds of spirit (ruh) in man: the first is the aerial spirit (روح هوائي), which is also called “nasama” (نسمة), the “natural spirit” (روح طبعي) and the “aerial body” (بدن هوائي); the second is the rational soul, al-nafs al-natiqa (نفس ناطقة); the third is the spirit of the malakut (روح ملكوت). As in “Altaf al-Quds”.
