Pork fat (lard) — is it halal?
Ruling: Haram
Description
Pork fat is pig adipose tissue (back fat, raw fat) and the fat rendered from it (lard). In the EU rendered fat is obtained by rendering without solvents. In the EAEU the species must be stated on rendered-fat labels; in the EU refined animal fat used in another food may be designated simply “animal fat” without the species.
Basis of the ruling
Pork fat is the fatty tissue of the pig (lard back fat, raw fat) and the fat rendered from it (lard). Rendering only separates the fat from the tissue: the fat remains the same fat, its essence does not change, so there is no istihala. All parts of the pig are impure in essence.
