The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Butter, milk fat — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Butter is milk fat from cow’s milk (EAEU: at least 50 % fat); ghee and clarified butter are the rendered fat phase (at least 99 %); anhydrous milk fat. The raw material is milk; no slaughter is involved. In the EU carotenes E160a may be added to butter (except butter from sheep and goat milk).

Basis of the ruling

Butter and milk fat come from the milk of a permissible animal and need no slaughter. The colour carotene E160a in butter is declared, but its carrier is not, and the carrier source is not disclosed. The finished product does not show whether this was used, so such a product is doubtful (mushbooh)
