Seeds (flax, chia, sesame, sunflower, pumpkin, poppy) — is it halal?
Ruling: Halal
Description
Edible seeds: flax, chia, sesame (tahini), sunflower, pumpkin, poppy, hemp. The seeds themselves are plant-based. Sesame is a mandatory allergen in the EU and the EAEU. The sources checked (1169/2011, TR CU 022/2011, TR CU 029/2012, 1333/2008) show no animal-origin or alcohol routes for the seeds themselves; roasted seasoned kernels may contain gelatin (a binder for the salt); seed oils are separate cards.
Basis of the ruling
Edible seeds — flax, chia, sesame (tahini), sunflower, pumpkin, poppy, hemp — are plant-based. Sesame is dehulled mechanically, with water or with a caustic soda solution (a mineral substance), after which the seed is washed and dried. The seeds themselves contain no animal raw material and no alcohol.
