The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E319 TBHQ — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Tertiary-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) — a synthetic antioxidant; industrial synthesis uses petrochemical raw materials. Possible links: ethanol in recrystallisation (patents of a Chinese food producer) and as a possible carrier; propylene glycol (can come from glycerol), citric acid, mono- and diglycerides including an undisclosed emulsifier in Tenox solutions; catalyst-support carbon (bone char possible).

Basis of the ruling

Tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) is a synthetic antioxidant; industrial synthesis uses petrochemical raw materials. The doubt lies in a purification aid: in the patents of a Chinese food-grade manufacturer the product is recrystallised from ethanol whose source is not named.
