E385 Calcium disodium EDTA — is it halal?
Description
A synthetic chelate salt: EDTA (from ethylenediamine, formaldehyde and sodium cyanide/HCN, historically from chloroacetic acid; c1–c4) as the disodium salt is chelated with calcium and dried. Calcium source: calcium carbonate (c8, E170 host) or «natural shells» (GB 1886.314-2020, c9); Nouryon uses calcium hydroxide (c10; lime may come from oyster shells — c11).
