The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

E320 Butylated hydroxyanisole — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) — a synthetic antioxidant; industrial synthesis uses petrochemical raw materials. Possible links: TBHQ as an intermediate raw material (see E319); ethanol in a patented route and as a possible carrier; propylene glycol, citric acid, mono- and diglycerides as possible carriers.

Basis of the ruling

Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) is a synthetic antioxidant; industrial synthesis uses petrochemical raw materials. The doubt lies in a processing aid: in one patented method of making BHA the intermediate product is dissolved in ethanol whose source is not named.
