E512 Stannous chloride — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Stannous chloride E512 is an inorganic salt (dihydrate SnCl2·2H2O). Tin (c1) is dissolved in hydrochloric acid (c2, host E507), chlorinated with chlorine (c3) or used to reduce the tetrachloride (c4). Tin may be secondary: tinplate scrap and cans (c5; content residues — c6), wastes (c7, c8), silk-dyeing residue (c9, 1908). Patents add alcohols (ethanol, methanol, propanol, butanol, isobutanol — each separately)

Basis of the ruling

Tin(II) chloride is an inorganic salt: tin is dissolved in hydrochloric acid or chlorinated. Patents use alcohol of unnamed source and stabilisers of undisclosed composition, and the salt is also regenerated from spent metallising solutions containing undisclosed organic matter.
