Salt — is it halal?

Ruling: Mashbuh (doubtful)

Description

Food-grade salt is a crystalline product consisting predominantly of sodium chloride; the salt itself is mineral. The animal and alcohol links in this dossier are the fauna of saltworks ponds, possible raw materials of brine-purification reagents and of particular additives, historical methods and patents; how widespread each is, is stated in its component.

Basis of the ruling

Food salt is mainly sodium chloride; it is obtained from seawater, rock salt and natural brines. Salt itself is mineral and pure (tahir). The doubt lies in two things. Brine shrimp (Artemia)
