The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Animal fat (species unspecified) — is it halal?

Ruling: Haram

Description

“Animal fat” without species. In the EU and EAEU refined fat in another food may be designated “animal fat”; rendered fat sold as such in the EAEU is labelled with species. Codex requires pork fat, lard and beef fat always to be named. In the US, in shortenings and “compound”, “animal fats” means fat of cattle, sheep, swine or goats. The species cannot be determined from “animal fat”.

Basis of the ruling

'Animal fat' without the species: refined fat in a product may be called this, including pork fat. The animal species is not stated: it may be pig, which is impure in its very essence; slaughter is not confirmed — industrial slaughter is carried out by non-Muslims, and this method is not acceptable in the Shariah.
