The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever guards against the doubtful matters protects his religion and his honor.”

Fish roe, caviar — is it halal?

Ruling: Halal

Description

Roe — fish eggs, and under TR EAEU 040/2016 also eggs of molluscs and echinoderms. “Grainy caviar” is from salmonids or sturgeons; in the EAEU roe labels state the fish species. There are substitutes and “caviar analogues” — from eggs of other species and other animals, or without any eggs.

Basis of the ruling

Roe is the eggs of fish: salmon, sturgeon, capelin and others; the fish species is given on the roe label. Fish roe, like the fish itself, is halal. Ruling: halal. Under EAEU rules "roe" also covers the roe of molluscs and echinoderms — scallop and sea urchin; it is haram as food.
