The Procedure of Tamlik

Question

(1) What is the procedure of tamlik (transfer of ownership)? Can tamlik be effected through students — whether from out of town or local — whose guardians are wealthy but who do not themselves own the nisab of zakat? Further, can property that has undergone tamlik be spent on other purposes such as the construction of mosques? And can tamlik also be carried out with the money from the hides of sacrificial animals or not? (2) Is it necessary for tamlik that the person made owner be an adult?

Answer

(1, 2) A person entitled to zakat is told: “Our madrasa needs construction, or salaries, or the purchase of goods, books and the like, and there is no money — help the madrasa.” He will say: “I myself am poor and entitled to zakat; I have no money — where would I give it from?
