Zakat on jewelry
Question
(1) Hindah and her husband live in partnership (joint household) with Hindah’s father-in-law. If Hindah and her husband separate from this arrangement and live independently, it will be difficult for them to sustain themselves — meaning that even food for two times a day and clothing will be obtained with difficulty. Hindah has no source of income.
Answer
(1) If the jewelry is for use, is the property of that woman, and is in her possession, then the zakat on it is also her responsibility, not the responsibility of her father-in-law. If she does not pay it she will be sinful. She may either calculate the zakat and give some jewelry itself as zakat, or give something else as zakat.
