Spending on the Mosque the Rent from Utensils Hired Out for Unlawful Purposes

Question

The mutawalli (trustee) of the mosque has bought cooking cauldrons, large awnings, floor coverings, cups, plates and so on in order to rent them out, and people take them to permissible and impermissible functions, for example qawwali (Sufi devotional singing with music), functions with dancing girls of ill repute and the like. What is the ruling on putting the rent received from this into the mosque? And what is the ruling on the mutawalli’s renting them out?

Answer

Rent that comes from unlawful income should not be spent on the mosque; moreover, these things should not be rented out for impermissible functions.
