Building a Madrasa with Donations Collected for a Mosque
Question
‘Umar was concerned with having a mosque built and kept striving for it; part of the mosque was even built, but it had not yet been completed when he laid the foundation of a madrasa in this same mosque, and, praise be to Allah, 36 students have already enrolled, among whom are both students of means and students without means, i.e. some can pay the tuition fee and some cannot.
Answer
Donations collected for a mosque may not be spent on a madrasa, and donations collected for a madrasa may not be spent on a mosque. It is not permissible to set up a madrasa on a place designated for prayer and to assign that place to educational work; nor should such young children be taught there as cannot maintain respect for the mosque.
