Using the belongings of a deserted mosque for a madrasa or a travellers’ lodge
Question
A new mosque has been built, and near it there is an old mosque in a broken and ruined state. Is it permissible to demolish this broken mosque and, with its debris (building material), build near the new mosque a madrasa, a travellers’ lodge or a chamber for the imam and muezzin to live in, or not? Likewise, the mosque has a house which is endowed for the mosque, and its income is spent on the mosque: may this debris or its value be used in that house or not?
Answer
A mosque which has become deserted, where there is no longer any possibility of praying, — that place should be enclosed and secured; according to the position on which the fatwa is given, it will forever remain a mosque.
