Upon whom is the sacrifice wajib? Is giving its value in charity sufficient?
Question
Question: Upon whom is the sacrifice wajib? Is it possible to give the price of the sacrificial animal to some poor person, or is it necessary to perform the sacrifice?
Answer
Whoever owns fifty-two and a half tolas (a unit of weight, ≈ 11.66 g) of silver, or some other thing of that value, in excess of his basic needs (hajat asliyya), the sacrifice is wajib upon him. During the days of sacrifice it is the sacrifice itself that is wajib; giving the value is not sufficient.
