An Unfounded Account of the Birth of Hazrat Shams Tabrizi
Question
Question: Zayd has seen in a book that Hazrat Mawlana Shams Tabrizi ﵀ was born without a father. The account was given as follows: Mawlana Rum’s daughter had a pain in her stomach; she went to her father and said, "Father, I have a pain in my belly." He said, "There is a small bottle on such-and-such a shelf; use the medicine in it." The girl did so, but there was a second bottle on that shelf, containing the ashes of Hazrat Mansur, and by mistake she used that one instead.
Answer
This account has no chain of transmission — indeed it is wholly baseless: Mawlana Shams Tabrizi was, on the contrary, the shaykh and elder spiritual guide of Mawlana Rum, and not at all a son of his daughter. [ar]مولوی هرگز نشد مولای روم ٭ تا غلام شمس تبریزی نشد[/ar] "Mawlawi [Jalal al-Din] never became the Master of Rum, until he became the servant of Shams Tabrizi."
