The Issue of Yazid
Question
I have a few questions; if you resolve them, it will be a great blessing for me. These days these questions are also being vigorously discussed as a topic in religious periodicals here — Tarjuman al-Qur’an, al-Balagh, Bayyinat, Tarjuman-i Islam, Khuddam al-Din, and others. These questions are as follows: (1) From the point of view of fiqh, is Yazid a kafir or a sinful believer (mu’min fasiq)? (2) If he is not a kafir and is called a fasiq, is it permissible to curse him and revile him or not? (3)
Answer
Discussing the kufr or Islam of Yazid is neither a matter of belief (‘aqida), on which the validity of faith itself would depend, nor a practical matter on which the acts prescribed by the Sacred Law would depend.
