Making the Permission of an Association a Requirement for Talaq

Question

Question: Tension between Zayd and his wife, owing to incompatibility of temperament, has grown to such a degree that Zayd sees his religion and his worldly life being ruined. Despite three years of continuous effort and admonition, instead of coming onto the right path his wife has remained disobedient. Her disregard for religion has gone so far that she has begun using indecent words even towards Zayd’s parents.

Answer

First the woman should be reformed gently and admonished with compassion; if that does not work, she should be warned in a suitable manner; as occasion demands, scolding is also permitted. When no measure has worked and he cannot bear it patiently either, then talaq is permitted.
