How Many Times Is Ghusl Obligatory after Zina?

Question

Zayd committed zina (fornication) with Hinda. Will the outward janaba be removed by performing ghusl once, or not? Some people say that ghusl will have to be performed forty times. What is the correct ruling?

Answer

Performing ghusl once removes every kind of janaba and legal (shar‘i) purity is attained — whether the janaba came from a nocturnal emission (ihtilam), from lawful intercourse, from unlawful intercourse, or in any other way. It is wrong [to claim] that after zina purity is not attained and janaba is not removed until ghusl has been performed forty times.
